Subtraction Addition Relation

When we subtract an addend from the sum of two addends, we get the other addend.

Let us consider the following example;

Add 193 and 28

Let us perform the following addition

193 + 28 = ?

We will place the numbers such that the tens digit is below tens column and ones digit below ones column as shown below

We will first add the digits at ones place that is 3, 8  and the result will be 11.

Now 11 is greater than 9 so the tens part of 11 that is 1 will be carried over to the tens place and 1 will be placed in the ones column of the answer

Then we will add the digits at tens place that is 9, 2 and that carry that is 1 and the result will be 12.

Now 12 is greater than 9 so the tens part of 12 that is 1 will be carried over to the hundreds place and 2 will be placed in the tens column of the answer

Then we will add the digits at hundreds place that is 1, 0 and that carry that is 1 and the result will be 2.

As  shown in the figure below

The final result will be 76

To verify addition subtraction relation we will subtract each of the addends one by one that is 28 and 48 from the sum 76.

Subtract 193 from 221

As we have to subtract 193 from 221 we will perform the following steps

Step 1: Subtract the ones first.

1 ones - 3 ones

As 1 is less than 3 so we will subtract the ones by regrouping.

1 tens 1 ones = 11 ones

11 ones - 3 ones = 8 ones.

Step 2: Subtract the tens

1 tens - 9 tens

As 1 is less than 9 so we will subtract the tens by regrouping.

1 hundred 1 tens = 11 tens

11 tens - 9 tens = 2 tens

Hence the answer will be 28

This 28 is the other addend.

Subtract 28 from 221

As we have to subtract 428 from 221 we will perform the following steps

Step 1: Subtract the ones first.

1 ones - 8 ones

As 1 is less than 8 so we will subtract the ones by regrouping.

1 tens 1 ones = 11 0nes

11 ones - 8 ones = 3 ones.

Step 2: Subtract the tens

1 tens - 2 tens

As 1 is less than 2 so we will subtract the tens by regrouping.

1 hundred 1 tens = 11 tens

11 tens - 2 tens = 9 tens

Step 3: Subtract the hundreds

1 hundreds - 0 hundreds = 1 hundreds

Hence the answer will be 193

This 193 is the other addend.

This proves Subtraction Addition Relation
